Huntress is the own label of Jannine Rickards, winemaker of considerable experience, and an avid outdoors person who loves to forage and hunt for food. Jannine has a strong track record for her work ethic, initially starting at Sileni Estates, then Te Kairanga, with Ata Rangi for 7 vintages and 3 vintages at Pegasus Bay, and then back to the Wairarapa for a stint at Julicher, and now she is at Urlar. In between, she has managed to fit in work in California, Burgundy and Australia. Clearly Jannine is a person of high energy! The 2018 ‘Waikura’ Pinot Noir Rosé, Waikura referring to the red glow in the sky, in Te Reo Maori, and the 2017 Martinborough Pinot Noir are her inaugural releases. I review the wines here. The wines have flavour profiles and the textures that match the wild food that Jannine loves.

Don Luciano Cafe & Roastery Don Luciano owner, Marvin draws on his Honduran heritage to introduce locals to the flavours and verve of his native Central America. The first thing people usually ask is why Marvin has called his new café ‘Don Luciano’. “It’s the name of my grandfather, who was a coffee farmer in Honduras. He introduced me to coffee.” Coffee, says Marvin, and the rituals around making it, “gave my grandfather so much pleasure. He had a real passion for it.” Don Luciano was born in 1896 and he grew coffee in La Esperanza, in the Intibucá region of Honduras, at one of the highest altitudes in Central America – “where the best coffee comes from”.

Grava Wines Grava (Spanish; = gravel) encapsulates the essence of grava wine production with our grapes grown on gravelly alluvial soil. Alistair has spent over ten years working extensively across various wine regions in Spain, including Galicia, Segovia, Toro and Malaga. He brings this broad experience with different climatic regions, diverse grape varieties and varied winemaking traditions to a New Zealand region renowned for high-quality wine production. Alistair particularly loves the traditional Spanish way of combining wine and food, while socialising with friends and family. This culture has lead to the grava wines being those that can be enjoyed in this setting, and work very well with a range of foods.

Six Barrel Soda Pals since the 90s, Joe & Mike have shared years of questionable fashion choices and ridiculous business plans. After some dodgy batches and accidental fermentation we perfected our syrups for cocktails and sodas in our Wellington dive bar and in 2012 we started Six Barrel Soda Co. with a lofty mission to shake up a flat soft drink market with experimental flavours and a new level of quality. We fired up a 10L pot and used a beat-up soda stream to make drinks in our soda store to show what we believe soda can be. Our early brave customers liked it and now our soda syrups and bottled sodas are now being used to make wonderful drinks all over the place by the best soda jerks, the most creative cafes, restaurants and bars and home soda fans looking for something different. Soft drinks need to change, so we're changing them.

CAMBRIDGE ROAD Cambridge Road Vineyard is a small family farmed estate established in 1986 with the intention of making world class Pinot Noir and Syrah. We focus our time and energy on perfecting and beautifying our land and cultivating it according to natural biodynamic and eco-farming principles. We believe in minimal intervention winemaking, low yields, and healthy living wines. We seek purity of voice in all our wines with a respect for the taste of place. We source organic fruit from other vineyards withing the region and occasionally further afield to offer a wider selection of taste. We work with a small group of like minded growers to add depth to our winemaking portfolio.
